How to Spot a Faulty Sofa Frame (and Return It in Time)
A faulty sofa frame will fail you in year two. The cushions still look fine. The fabric is intact. But the frame sags, creaks, or shifts under weight. At that point, the return window has closed, the warranty excludes "normal wear," and you are stuck with a 200-pound piece of broken furniture. The only time to catch a faulty frame is in the first 30 days, during the return window.
This guide covers the specific checks that reveal a bad frame, plus how to document the failure for a successful return.
Why Frame Failures Are Hidden
Frames are wrapped in fabric and padding. You cannot see the frame directly on a finished sofa. Manufacturers know this. Cheap frames (particleboard, under-engineered joints, weak corner blocks) pass inspection because fabric hides them. The only way to catch problems is through indirect testing.
The 6 Checks to Do on Delivery
Do these within the first 30 days, before the return window closes. Ideally within the first week.
Check 1: The Rock Test
Sit on one end of the sofa. Have a second person sit on the other end at the same time. Now rock side to side. A quality frame flexes slightly but does not twist. A faulty frame twists or shifts noticeably.
If you feel the sofa "give" in unexpected ways, the frame is likely under-engineered.
Check 2: The Creak Test
Sit down on different parts of the sofa. Listen for creaks, groans, or popping sounds. Wood frames may creak slightly when new; this usually quiets after break-in. Persistent or loud creaks indicate loose joinery that will fail under repeated use.
Check 3: The Lift Test
Lift one end of the sofa slightly off the floor (6 inches). Shake it gently. A quality frame stays rigid. A faulty frame wobbles or you hear internal movement. Wobble is the frame flexing independently of the rest of the structure.
Check 4: The Arm Push
Place both hands on the top of one arm and push straight down firmly. Then push sideways. The arm should feel rigid. If it gives more than half an inch in any direction, the arm joint is weak.
Check 5: The Cushion Base
Remove the seat cushions. Push on the cushion base (the platform under the cushions). It should feel firm or have uniform spring tension. Soft spots, sagging, or broken springs are frame-level issues.

Check 6: The Leg Check
Inspect each leg. Wiggle each one. Legs should feel rock-solid. Looseness indicates poorly seated or poorly designed joinery. Cross-check that all four legs support weight equally; a rocking sofa on a flat floor means an uneven frame.
How to Document Frame Problems
- Video the test (rock test, creak, lift) with narration
- Photograph the sofa from all angles
- Note the exact date of delivery
- Contact the brand within the return window (usually 14 to 30 days)
- Request return or replacement in writing
- Keep original packaging if possible
