How to Fluff Flat Couch Cushions and Make Them Last

Flat couch cushions are a fixable problem, not a signal to replace the sofa. With the right fluffing routine, flat cushions return to 80 to 95 percent of their original shape. The routine takes 5 minutes per week and adds years of life to even mid-tier sofas. Most people skip it because nobody taught them the method.

This guide covers the full fluffing method, plus refill options for cushions beyond simple fluffing.

Why Cushions Go Flat

  • Daily compression during sitting
  • Fill migration to edges (especially down and feather fills)
  • Foam core compression over 18 to 36 months
  • Dry air hardening foam
  • Sitting in the same spot consistently

For a deeper look at why fill compresses, see our why cloud couches cost so much guide.

The 5-Minute Fluffing Method

  1. Remove the cushion from the sofa
  2. Hold it at one edge and shake hard for 10 seconds
  3. Punch the middle with your fist to loosen packed fill
  4. Stand the cushion on its short edge and bounce it 3 times
  5. Turn and repeat for even distribution
  6. Place back on sofa with firmer side up

Apply to each seat cushion. Back cushions usually need less attention but benefit from the same routine occasionally.

Weekly vs Daily Schedule

  • Weekly fluff: minimum for any quality cushion
  • Daily fluff: for the first 30 days of sofa life (trains the fill)
  • Monthly rotation: swap cushion positions (end-to-middle)
  • Quarterly inspection: check for flat spots that need redistribution

For a thorough routine, see our cloud couch slouch fix guide.

Rotation and Flip

Three directions to rotate:

  • End-to-end: swap left and right cushions
  • Top-to-bottom: flip cushion to expose the less-used side
  • Front-to-back: flip cushion 180 degrees so the back edge becomes the front

One rotation per week spreads wear across all four surfaces. This alone doubles effective cushion life.

Refilling Feather and Down Cushions

If your cushion has a zipper, you can refill it:

  1. Unzip the cushion
  2. Feel inside for clumped versus sparse areas
  3. Redistribute existing fill by hand
  4. Add new fill if needed; fabric stores sell bags of feather or down fiberfill ($15 to $40 per pound)
  5. Zip closed and sit on the cushion to test firmness
  6. Add or remove fill until the cushion feels right

Polyester fiberfill works in a pinch but does not match the feel of down. For down cushions, use down or down-blend replacement fill.

Replacing Foam Cores

When foam cores compress beyond recovery:

  1. Remove old foam from the cushion cover
  2. Measure the exact dimensions needed
  3. Order replacement foam (high-density, 1.8 pound density or higher)
  4. Wrap foam in batting for softer feel
  5. Insert into cushion cover and zip

Replacement foam costs $60 to $150 per cushion. Extends sofa life 5 to 8 years. For when to replace vs reupholster, see our replace cushions vs reupholster guide.

Prevention From Day 1

  • Fluff every week from the start
  • Rotate cushions regularly
  • Avoid always sitting in the same spot
  • Keep humidity above 30 percent (dry air hardens foam)
  • Keep direct sunlight off cushions (UV breaks down fill)

FAQ

How often should I fluff my couch cushions?
Weekly for quality cushions. Daily for the first 30 days of sofa ownership to train the fill. Monthly for low-use guest-room sofas.
Does fluffing really extend cushion life?
Yes. Regular fluffing prevents fill from permanently migrating to edges. It can double or triple the functional lifespan of cushions compared to no routine at all.
What is the best type of cushion fill?
High-density foam wrapped in down or down blend gives the best balance of support and feel. Pure down is softer but compresses faster. Polyester fiberfill is the least durable. For fill types, see our why cloud couches cost so much guide.
Can I add fill to cushions myself?
Yes, if the cushion has a zipper. Unzip, add fill a handful at a time, close and test. Repeat until firm. Sources: fabric stores or online suppliers of upholstery fill.
When should I replace cushions instead of fluffing?
When the cushion feels flat to the frame (no bounce), when fill is falling apart inside, or when the cushion cover is worn. See our replace cushions vs reupholster guide.
