The Single Rule to Remember

The orientation is described from the perspective of someone sitting on the sofa, looking out at the room. Not from the perspective of someone standing in the room looking at the sofa.

• Right-arm facing (RAF): the arm is on the right side when you are sitting on the sofa
• Left-arm facing (LAF): the arm is on the left side when you are sitting on the sofa

This is the opposite of what intuition suggests. Most buyers assume orientation is from the viewer's perspective. Always confirm the brand uses the industry standard.

Right-Arm Facing (RAF)

A right-arm-facing chaise sectional has the extended chaise on the right side when you are sitting on the sofa looking out. From the doorway looking in, the chaise is on your left.

If you want the chaise on the right side of the room from the entrance, you need a left-arm-facing sectional (confusing, yes).

Left-Arm Facing (LAF)

A left-arm-facing chaise sectional has the chaise on the left side from the sitter's perspective. From the doorway, the chaise appears on your right.

Draw a quick diagram before ordering. Sit imaginary in your future couch spot, look at the room, and decide which side the chaise should extend toward.

Chaise vs Chofa vs Corner

Different sectional shapes use different terminology:

1. Stand in the doorway of the room where the sectional will go.
2. Walk to where the sofa will sit and turn around to face the TV or focal point.
3. Decide which side of the couch the chaise should extend toward. This is from your sitting perspective.
4. If the chaise should be on your right hand, order RAF. If on your left hand, order LAF.

U-shapes need 16 x 13 feet minimum of room space to avoid blocking traffic. They work best in dedicated media rooms or large living rooms.

• Measure the wall the main sofa will sit against. The sofa portion plus the chaise extension cannot exceed this.
• Measure the perpendicular wall or walkway. The chaise extension cannot block this.
