A sofa warranty is either gold or fine print. Some warranties cover the frame for a lifetime. Some cover fabric for 90 days and exclude "wear." The same language in two warranties can mean two very different things. Knowing what to look for before you buy is the difference between a claim paid and a claim denied.

The 4 Parts of a Sofa Warranty

1. Frame (structural)
2. Cushions and fill (comfort components)
3. Fabric (surface materials)
4. Mechanism (reclining, sleeper, power parts)

Each has its own length and terms. Read each section separately before buying.

Frame Warranty

• Lifetime: top-tier brands, usually hardwood frames
• 10 to 20 years: mid-tier brands
• 5 years: budget brands, often particleboard frames
• 1 to 2 years: red flag; expect early failure

Cushion and Fill Warranty

Cushions are the part most likely to fail. Look for:

• 5 to 10 years on high-density foam
• 3 to 5 years on down and down-blend fills
• 1 to 2 years on polyester fiberfill

Most warranties exclude "normal wear," which is vague. Check whether "flattening" counts as wear or as a defect. Fabric Warranty

• Performance fabric: often 3 to 7 years against stains, fading, pilling
• Standard upholstery: 1 to 2 years
• Natural fabrics (linen, cotton): usually short warranties due to expected wear
• Leather: varies widely; full-grain often has longer coverage than bonded

Mechanism Warranty

For reclining, sleeper, or power sofas:

• Motor warranty: 3 to 7 years on quality motors
• Manual mechanism: usually 5 to 10 years
• Sleeper mattress: 2 to 5 years

What Is Always Excluded

• Normal wear and tear
• Damage from improper cleaning
• Pet damage
• Stains from use (unless fabric has specific stain warranty)
• Damage from moving or shipping by the owner
• Damage from modification or reupholstery
• Commercial use (most warranties are residential only)

How to Document a Defect

1. Photograph the defect from multiple angles in good lighting
2. Note the date of purchase and original receipt
3. Note when the defect first appeared
4. Keep the original tags and care label
5. Contact the brand within the warranty window
6. Request written confirmation of the claim
7. Follow up every 2 weeks until resolved
